Winter Bulbs and Mulch

Question:When should bulbs be planted this fall, as well as established beds of bulbs, be mulched for winter protection? What are some good mulches to use?

Answer: Mulches should never be applied to bulbs until the ground has frozen at least an inch. By waiting until this time, mice and other rodents will be prevented from nesting overwinter and later causing injury to the bulbs. Furthermore the purpose of the mulch is to keep the cold in the ground and prevent thawing and heaving. Evergreen branches make a good mulch because they lie flat, do not blow away and are easily removed in the spring. Other excellent materials include pine needles, straw and marsh hay.
