Step #1 Iris flower best if clumps are lifted and divided every four or five years. This is done in July.

Step #2 Cut foliage to 8 inches and divide rhizomes to allow two or three fans of leaves to each piece.

Step #3 Replant four or five divisions of a kind 6 to 10 inches apart with fans at outer edges of clump.

Step #4 Dig holes so divisions will lie just below surface, adding fertilizer to soil below (white dots).

Step #5 After planting, firm soil with feet, then water well. Rhizomes should be 1 inch below soil surface.

Step #6 When soil has frozen in fall, cover with a light mulch such as excelsior to prevent “heaving.”
