Chinese Hibiscus

Question: Chinese Hibiscus bloom nicely in my small greenhouse… but please tell me why the leaves turn yellow and drop of while the plant continues to flower. I feed with liquid fertilizer in the water and keep the temperature about 60 degrees most of the winter. O.A., Neb.

Answer: Your temperature may be a little cool to allow Chinese hibiscus to continue growth during winter. The usual method of culture is to rest them in winter by keeping them on the dry side in a temperature of 45 to 50 degrees, prune them back in spring and repot. They need plenty of water and food when growth is active and drainage should be good.
