Garden Composting

Question: Can you tell me how the method of organic gardening which eliminates the compost pile and applies the material directly to the soil works? DH, Neb

Answer: The method is to dig a trench 6 to 8 inches deep, kitchen waste in it in a continuous layer and cover it immediately with soil. lt would be a good plan to space trenches 3 or 4 more feet apart and gradually work over a plot in this way. Planting should be deferred for 6 weeks or more over the trenched area. It works to good advantage alongside an asparagus bed and, of course, in a vacant plot.
