Pansies, whose rich, intense colors are especially valuable after the yellow of daffodils has passed, have long been grown in baskets, beds and borders. Of easy culture, they are usually treated as biennials with the seed sown in June or July for bloom the following spring.
A cold-frame is ideal for propagating them, and except in frost-free sections, they are best carried over winter in the coldframe for transplanting outdoors shortly before blooming time. However, if you lack coldframe space to winter them, you can transplant them to their permanent home in fall and winter-protect with straw or hay. Mulch when flowering begins; and keep blooms picked and plants pinched back to net a crop of flowers in fall.
